JetBlue Plane Windshield Shatters, Flight Diverted

By    |   Monday, 07 May 2018 02:07 PM EDT

A JetBlue plane's windshield shattered midflight, forcing the flight to be diverted Sunday afternoon, ABC News reported.

An airline spokesperson confirmed that the flight was making its way from San Juan to Tampa but was forced to make a diversion to Fort Lauderdale "in an abundance of caution following a report of damage to one of the outer layers of the cockpit windscreen."

The cracks did not cause the cabin to lose pressure and the plane made a safe landing however, passengers were shaken up by the incident as they were escorted onto another flight.

One person, Michael Paluska, a reporter for WFTS who happened to be on the flight, shared a video of the ordeal to Twitter..

"Windshield in cockpit shattered 3/4 of way home on our @JetBlue flight to #Tampa from #PuertoRico," she captioned the post.

In the video clip, a flight attendant can be heard explaining to passengers how these incidents were not uncommon.

"It happens, I wouldn't say frequently, but I've actually had this happen before," the flight attendant said, per ABC News.

"There's multiple, multiple layers in the windscreen and it's the outer layer that shattered. ... Like I said, we're not in any grave danger."

The incident comes days after a Southwest plane with a broken window was forced to make an emergency landing in Cleveland, Ohio.

The flight was carrying 76 passengers from Chicago to Newark when it was suddenly diverted, The New York Post reported.

The plane made a safe landing and no injuries were reported, but it occurred just two weeks after Jennifer Riordan was nearly sucked out of the window of another Southwest flight when an exploding engine caused the glass to shatter midair.

The plane made an emergency landing and Riordan was rushed to hospital, but she later died form her extensive injuries.
