JetBlue Flight Diverted Over Unruly Passenger Who May Face Charges

By    |   Monday, 16 June 2014 03:15 PM EDT

An unruly passenger who caused a JetBlue flight to Las Vegas to be diverted over the weekend may face criminal charges.

The unidentified man is seen in a video yelling and trying to lunge over seats after the plane took off from JFK Airport in New York early Saturday morning. The pilot diverted the flight to Detroit where airport police there determined the man needed medical attention and transported him to a hospital.

The man’s daughter tried to calm him down before crew members and fellow passengers helped to restrain him.

“Dad, stop it,” the daughter could be heard saying on the video.

A crew member managed to get a pair of plastic handcuffs on the man and take him to the back of the plane but not before he was able to kick his daughter.

CBS News travel editor Peter Greenberg said alcohol consumption is often the reason why there have been an estimated 28,000 incidents in the past seven years involving unruly passengers with almost a third — 8,000 — reported in the past year.

"Flying is a stressful situation for many passengers, and when they're left to their own resources when waiting for a plane, a lot of them will drink," Greenberg said.

Several airline companies recently endorsed new protocols to deal with unruly fliers, including curtailing the drinking of alcohol consumption at airport terminals and closing a loophole that allowed some disruptive passengers to escape punishment, particularly when jurisdictional questions arise.
