Jesus Campos hasn’t vanished at all. Ellen DeGeneres just landed an exclusive interview with the missing Las Vegas hotel guard who confronted shooter Stephen Paddock, ABC reported while previewing her Wednesday show.
The Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino security guard, hailed as a hero for uncovering Paddock’s 32nd Floor machine-gun sniper’s nest, reportedly disappeared on Thursday moments before he was scheduled to conduct a series of five other television interviews.
ABC said Campos would be appearing on Wednesday's "The Ellen DeGeneres Show” alongside building engineer Stephen Schuck in what he has said would be his only public comment on the shooting.
A clip of the interview, recorded and released on Tuesday, showed an emotional Campos talking about the night 58 people were killed and over 500 injured when Paddock opened fire on a music festival being held outside below the hotel.
The timeline of the massacre has been a point of confusion in investigations, but Campos’ account of events was on par with what has been reported about the shooting.
Campos explained that he was called to check on an opened door on the 32nd floor but, upon finding “metal brackets” blocking the door, requested assistance from an engineer, according to the clip shared by ABC.
Paddock opened fire through the door, wounding Campos in the leg.
That’s when he called in on his radio that shots were fired.
Meanwhile Schuck, who was unaware of the situation, was making his way to the 32nd floor when he heard shots being fired.
“Jesus leaned out and said, 'Take cover, take cover,' and yelled at me and within milliseconds, if he didn't say that, I could've got hit,” Schuck said, per ABC.
After the interview, DeGeneres handed Shuck tickets to an Indianapolis Colts game and gave Campos with season tickets to the Oakland Raiders.
Mandalay Resort owner MGM Resorts International told the Las Vegas Review Journal that “Jesus Campos wants to tell his story at a time and place of his choosing,” adding that “he’s asked that everyone respect his request for privacy. We could not be more proud of Jesus.”
