When asked about the 2016 election, Jerry Seinfeld compared the presidential election to the historic O.J. Simpson trial that took place in 1994.
In an interview with CNN, Seinfeld called the election “entertaining” and “interesting,” then said that it also felt like “the O.J. trial.” Seinfeld, a longtime comic who had his own hit TV show in the 1990s and 2000s, couldn’t help but try to inject some humor into a campaign that has often taken itself very seriously.
“I’m just laughing [about] what he thinks being president is,” the comedian said of Republican nominee Donald Trump.
“‘This company’s going to do that, you’re going to go over here. I can make other countries do whatever I say.’ It’s a kid’s image of being president. It’s like if you were 10, and they would make your president of your house, you would start ordering the dog around not realizing no one’s going to listen to you.”
The interview took place at the GOOD+ Foundation luncheon for the Fatherhood Initiative, which encourages fathers to be better dads through counseling and workshops.
Seinfeld explained his analogy between the election and the O.J. Simpson trial this way: “If you’re white when the verdict of the O.J. trial [was read], you were like: ‘Oh, I didn’t know there was this feeling out there.’ This has been another moment like that where you’re kind of introduced to people that you live with and you didn’t know what was going on underneath.”
Seinfeld’s current web series, “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee,” was recently nominated for an Emmy award, and Seinfeld still enjoys performing stand-up comedy shows. “I really love being a comedian,” he said. “That’s my favorite life.”
