Jaycee Chan, the son of movie star Jackie Chan, will be formally charged with a drug offense in China after prosecutors took the next step Wednesday in the country’s legal system to
approve the 32-year-old’s arrest, Reuters reported.
Chan was arrested in August in Beijing when he tested positive for marijuana and the drug was found at his home. Chinese prosecutors this week approved that arrest, which moves Chan on through the court system.

This summer, China’s president Xi Jinping announced that the country would begin to "harshly crack down" on drug use. The country is tough on sentencing in drug-related cases, and Reuters said an attorney expected Chan to receive three years if he’s found guilty.
The Shanghaiist reported that a Taiwanese movie star, Kai Ko, was also arrested in the same incident. Ko was released at the end of August after getting detention for drug use, and he then held a press conference where he sobbed and apologized for his mistake. He also said he was introduced to the drug by Chan.
Jackie Chan, who has been a spokesperson in China for the National Anti-Drug Committee, spoke up after his son’s arrest.
“You did the wrong thing so you have to take responsibility," The Shanghaiist quoted Chan talking to his son. "As your father, I am willing to face the path of your future with you."
Reuters quoted a commentary in China’s Global Times that said celebrities shouldn’t escape punishment for drug use.
“Western celebrities like Kobe Bryant and Hugh Grant were embraced by fans again after they were hit by scandals, causing an illusion among Chinese entertainers that they could be as lucky as Bryant and Grant," the commentary said. "However, Chinese entertainment figures are subjected to higher standards of morality than their Western counterparts."
