While Janoris Jenkins' was in Florida, a dead body was found in the basement of the NFL player's New Jersey home on Tuesday, Yard Barker reported.
Officials have identified the deceased as 25-year-old Roosevelt Rene, who was a friend of Jenkins and had been living at the home when he died from what authorities suspect to be possible strangulation or suffocation, Yard Barker said.
Sources told ESPN that Jenkins, who has played defensive back for the Giants the past two seasons and had attended a team minicamp two weeks ago in Florida, had not been home when the incident occurred.
He reportedly wanted to fly back to New Jersey upon hearing the news but has been advised by attorneys to remain in Florida.
Jenkins lives with his brother and friends in the New Jersey home during the season but in the off-season he often stays in Florida, News 12 New Jersey noted.
According to neighbors, his brother lives in the home year-round.
The news outlet reported that police and crime scene investigators swarmed the house Tuesday morning after being alerted at around 10 a.m.
Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Dennis Calo said in a statement that the official cause of death is still to be determined by the Bergen County Medical Examiner's Office, CNN reported.
The Giants said they are monitoring the situation.
