An Italian sailor revived a kitten using mouth-to-mouth resuscitation after it was found floating in the harbor, and then the boat's crew adopted the revived baby cat once a veterinarian checked it out.
A sailor rescued the kitten as the coast guard ship entered the Sicilian port of Marsala after a patrol mission, reported The Associated Press, and a video showed a crew member administering mouth-to-mouth to get water out of the kitten's lungs,
According to a translation on the coast guard's Facebook page, children on shore alerted them to a kitten floating in the water about 1 p.m. local time Friday. A sailor jumped into the water to rescue the kitten and brought it on board.
The translated statement said the sailors began using procedures "of resuscitation for which they were trained but I normally do on human beings," including mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
"After a few minutes the kitty, of not more than a month, she started to give the first signs of life, expelling water and emitting a faint meow," said the coast guard Facebook post. "… The kitten was then transported in the offices of the local captaincy where it was dry."
The Facebook post said the kitten was examined by a veterinarian and given a clean bill of health. The ship ended up adopting the kitten, nicknaming it Charlie, noted the Facebook pages.
Many on Facebook hailed the Italian coast guard's rescue efforts.
