iPhone 6 Rumors: Apple's Newest Smartphone Could Feature Barometer

By    |   Friday, 20 June 2014 09:30 AM

The upcoming iPhone 6 could double as a user's own personal weather station, complete with a barometer sensor to measure air pressure.

Mark Gurman of the website 9to5Mac.com wrote that there are already applications that can track altitude, but the new reference in Xcode 6 and iOS 8 appears to be "a new framework" that requires new Apple hardware.

"A barometer is a sensor commonly used for measuring altitude and the sensor is already commonly found in Android devices such as the Galaxy Nexus," Gurman wrote. "A barometer sensor could be used by hikers, mountain climbers, bike riders, and enthusiasts who want accurate knowledge into their current altitude. Barometers, via air pressure data, also measure temperature and weather information."

Gurman's post follows a March report cited by MacRumors.com, which hinted that the company was toying with the idea of an air-pressure sensor.

"Electronics analyst Sun Chang Xu reports on her Weibo account that the next iPhone may add a pressure, temperature, and humidity sensor," MacRumors.com reported. "This same analyst previously reported that Apple may use 'optical sensors' to measure heart rate and oxygen levels in the rumored iWatch. The addition of these atmospheric sensors would bring it up in line with Samsung's S4 which included similar atmospheric sensors."

The barometer sensor is just the latest leak preceding the upcoming launch of the mysterious iPhone 6, which some say could be released sometime in the fall, maybe as early as September.

In May, The Atlantic Wire quoted Taiwan's Business Times as saying that battery production issues pushed the launch of the iPhone 6 back. The Atlantic Wire wrote that the delay could lead to a double iPhone launch, one for the larger phone and another for the smaller device.

The Wire added that Apple could opt for releasing a 4.7- inch device out in September and the 5.5-inch version closer to the holiday season. The news site noted that a German phone company, Deutsche Telekom, has told customers that they can expect the new phone Sept. 19 as a way of discouraging them from swapping service providers.
