Apple released its 7.1.2 version for its iOS on Monday, providing numerous fixes and security updates for iPhones, iPads, and iPod while improving the operation of iBeacon and mail.

Laptop Mag.com reported that a "patch will improve connectivity for iBeacon, allow data transfers to third-party accessories such as bar-code scanners, and make important data-protection changes for mail attachments."

The site also reported that minor changes were made to the lock screen that had limited the number of incorrect passwords that could be tried and contacts that could be obtained from Siri.

"iOS 7.1.2 applies to every device supported by iOS 7.1: the iPhone 4, 4S, 5, 5C, and 5S; the iPad 2, both Retina iPads, both iPad minis, and the iPad Air; and the fifth-generation iPod touch. It can be downloaded over the air or through iTunes," Apple announced, according to ARC Technica.com.

"If minor iOS updates are your jam, then it's time to hit the old Software Update button, because iOS 7.1.2 has arrived for iPhones, iPads, and iPod touches," wrote Dan Moren of Macworld.com. "Among the tweaks made in the update are improvements to iBeacon connectivity and stability; a fix for a bug involving data transfer from some third-party accessories, such as bar code scanners; and the correction of a known issue with the data protection in mail attachments."

Sam Oliver, of Appleinsider.com, reported that the fixes should be compatible with the upcoming iOS 8.

"iOS 7.1.2 comes just over two months after the release of iOS 7.1.1, which brought improvements to Touch ID and keyboard responsiveness," wrote Oliver. "It is not clear how many more maintenance updates Apple plans to provide before the launch of iOS 8, which is widely expected to drop alongside the next-generation iPhone this fall."

Chatter on Twitter about the 7.1.2 fixes seemed to focus on just how extensive the patchwork would go.
