Indiana Granny Fights Off Carjackers: 'You Are Not Getting My Car'

By    |   Thursday, 11 December 2014 08:53 AM EST

An Indiana granny fought off a trio of would-be carjackers Sunday evening, sustaining a black eye that is now swollen shut. Even after pulling a gun on her, the teenage boys didn't get her van.

"He come up to my car and he said, 'Do you know where Hendricks Place is?'" 67-year-old Kay Kise told NBC affiliate WTHR and Indianapolis police.

"I told him it was just two blocks over and continued grabbing my shopping bags. The next thing you know, I turned back around and he had this gun right in my face."

The boy demanded the keys to her licensed handicap van as his friends approached from down the street.

"You are not getting the keys to my car," he told him sternly, pushing the gun aside. She had only had the van since the summer, after her Ford Focus was hit by another driver, and totaled.

That's when the assailant socked her right in the left eye.

Kise said she doesn't remember exactly what happened when he began punching her, but apparently she cried out, as her 13-year-old next door neighbor Shantel Johnson heard her screams.

"So I went down to see what was wrong, and her face was bleeding and it was swollen," said Johnson. "So I ran back upstairs and I was like, 'Mom, Mrs. Kay is hurt! Mrs Kay is hurt!'"

Paramedics treated Kise at the scene as well as at the hospital, and determined she would heal in just a few weeks' time.

Johnson said Kise is "a very good neighbor" and couldn’t understand why anyone would assault her.

"I don't hurt nobody," said Kise.
