An ad in a Bloomingdale's catalogue has come under fire from critics who say it is inappropriate and makes light of date rape.
"Spike your best friend’s eggnog when they’re not looking," says a block of text on the page advertising clothes by Rebecca Minkoff.
The text shows a man looking at a woman, whose attention is occupied by something out of frame.
"Rape culture at its finest. Well done, #Bloomingdales. You are garbage," one woman wrote on Twitter,
according to Fortune.
"#Bloomingdales comin thru with the rapey ads for christmas, nice," said another Twitter user.
Bloomingdale’s, the luxury department store owned by Macy’s, saw the controversy coming to a head, and issued an apology on Tuesday via Twitter.
Refinery29.com commented that, "Between this and Target's 'Obsessive Christmas Disorder' sweaters that make light of OCD, the holiday shopping scene seems to be a bit more incendiary than usual."
"It disgusts me that the lack of decoration on Starbucks cups has caused a bigger uproar than this Bloomingdales ad,"
wrote one Twitter user, alluding to the recent flap over Starbucks' holiday cups.
