Spanish police announced the results of a January raid Tuesday that seized 10,000 or more guns from an illegal gun operation in several regions of Spain that resulted in five arrests.

As part of the raid, authorities discovered a workshop in which the suspects arrested could take the deactivated weapons and reactivate them to make them operation again, reported NBC News.

The suspects had plans to sell the reactivated weapons, including assault rifles, machine guns, and anti-aircraft weaponry, to terrorist cells and gangs within France, Spain, and Belgium.

The guns were bought legally, but laws were broken in the reactivation of the weapons and intended sale to gangs and terrorists, NBC News said. Spain’s police worked with Europol to bring down the criminals.

The investigation was sparked by the shooting in 2014 at the Jewish Museum of Belgium, which killed four people, and was part of a larger effort to crack down on illegal guns throughout Europe, UPI reported.

Twitter users on both sides of the gun control debated praised the raid.
