I-20 Buckles in Near Atlanta, Injuring Motorcyclist

By    |   Tuesday, 18 April 2017 05:53 AM EDT

A section of Interstate 20 outside of Atlanta buckled Monday morning between the Flat Shoals Road exit and Gresham Road overpass, injuring a motorcyclist and leading officials to close all westbound lanes of I-20.

DeKalb County police said that an underground gas leak caused the road to buckle, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution. A motorcyclist traveling about 55 mph was injured when the road buckled just before he reached it, and he was thrown from the motorcycle 10 to 15 feet in the air. His bike landed about 50 feet away, a witness reported to the AJC.

“(The motorcycle) just fell in,” Greg Phillips said. “It was like a dip.”

The man wasn’t hit by any cars after falling from his bike, the AJC reported. Passersby including some who worked at a nearby hospital tried to help the man, who had multiple fractures including a likely broken leg. He was taken to the hospital.

After the motorcyclist fell, the buckling continued until it was about 2 to 3 feet high, the paramedic who helped him said.

“The roadway just started getting higher and higher,” Dennis Pierre Charles said, the AJC reported. “I’m not sure if something shifted underneath.”

Altanta area travelers are already dealing with closure of I-85 after a fire caused part of the road to collapse in March, WSB-2 reported. That part of the road will be completed in mid-May.

Twitter users from the area are feeling barraged by recent events.
