A Hyundai recall for 2015 and 2016 Sonatas has been launched following of complaints sunroofs flying off while driving.
According to Auto Blog, there were nearly 63,000 standard and hybrid Sonatas being recalled and only pertains to those with panoramic sunroofs.
The panoramic sunroofs have a wind deflector in the front, which is held by an anchor. Apparently what’s happening is the anchor is failing to keep the deflector in place, which is leading to them detaching from the vehicles.
Despite there being no reported injuries or deaths as a result of this sunroof malfunction, an internal investigation still prompted the recall.
Reports started to trickle in during March, according to Mlive.com.
“If the wind deflector becomes partially detached from its mounting points after the sunroof is opened, it can interfere with the moveable sunroof panel while the sunroof is being closed,” Hyundai told NHTSA, according to USA Today. “The tempered glass sunroof panel can detach from the sunroof assembly due to interference with the wind deflector, or if the customer tries to force the sunroof panel closed.”
According to The Business Journal, the recall will pertain to all Sonata Hybrids that were built from Dec. 8, 2014, to August 18, 2015. Standard Sonatas built from May 28, 2014, to March 18, 2016, will also be recalled.
According to Mlive.com, recall notifications won’t be sent out until the beginning of December, and car owners will not have to pay for the repairs.
