Hewlett-Packard has launched HP Sprout, a $1,899 desktop computer that scans items placed on a mat in front of it and transforms them into digital content.

“The Sprout jams together pretty much every new idea that HP has had. It’s almost as if Tim Burton designed a personal computer,” Forbes contributor George Anders said in a video about the device.

The computer includes a traditional screen along with a new work mat that includes sensors to capture information about anything set upon it. It also includes an overhead camera that can scan anything placed on the mat.

HP Sprout has been met with intrigue, curiosity, and uncertainty, Anders said, and is most likely to be useful for artists, designers, and creators rather than traditional office workers.

“It’s possible they could be onto something big,” Anders said. “It’s also possible that this could be a product that comes and goes.”

Sprout is part of the HP Blended Reality ecosystem.

The Sprout Illuminator combines a scanner, depth sensor, high-resolution camera and projector.

The device will be available Nov. 9 at select stores, with preorders underway.

Twitter users seemed intrigued.
