'How I Met Your Mother' Sorry, Skewered for Racism in Kung Fu Spoof

The hit television comedy “How I Met Your Mother” is sorry and has apologized for a recent episode that insulted Asians by having members of the cast wear kimonos and "yellowface" during a spoof of Kung Fu movies.

Carter Bays, a co-creator of the show, wrote a series of tweets explaining the thought process behind the episode and apologized for offending viewers.

The episode in question was titled “Slapsgiving 3: Slappointment in Slapmarra,” which follows a series tradition about powerful slaps among friends. The episode begins with the series’ main characters sitting in a bar and the character Marshall Eriksen explaining how he sought out special training to deliver Barney Stinson an epic slap.

“Just because it’s a joke on TV doesn’t mean that it doesn’t hold real power and influence,” wrote Tara Aquino on Complex.com. “The dismal portrayals of Asian people and cultures we do get, and lack of Asian representation on screen, directly influences how audiences view Asians, what they expect from them, and how they treat them.”

The reaction was just as strong on Twitter, where critics took the hashtag #HowIMetYourRacism.

Not everyone, though, took offense to the episode.
