Some House Republicans Worry About Cooperating With Obama

By    |   Monday, 12 September 2011 11:23 AM EDT

Republican House leaders sought to find areas of common ground with President Barack Obama after his jobs speech last week, but some Republicans don’t like the idea of cooperating with the president — even on policies that the GOP has backed in the past, Politico reports.

“Obama is on the ropes; why do we appear ready to hand him a win?” a senior House Republican aide told the news service. “I just don’t want to co-own the economy by having to tout that we passed a jobs bill that won’t work or at least won’t do enough.”

Some congressmen are worried that ideas they have supported in the past, including free trade agreements and tax relief for small businesses, could increase the government’s debt.

“To assume that we’re naturally for these things because we’ve been for them does not mean we will be for them if they cause debt, if they [have] tax increases, and if they take money from the free-enterprise sector, which creates jobs,” said Texas Rep. Pete Sessions.
