A hot air balloon accident in Turkey killed one Chinese tourist and injured nine other Chinese and Malaysia tourists on Wednesday morning.
According to the BBC, the incident occurred around 8:15 a.m. local time in the Guvercinlik Valley in Cappadocia. Tang Yi has been named as the fatality, and one Malaysian was reported to be in critical condition. Injured parties were hospitalized, and were said to be in fair condition.
The balloon was launched from Goreme, and crash landed after winds shifted suddenly, Gov. Mehmet Ceylan
told The Associated Press. An investigation into the technical details of the malfunction is ongoing, he added.
Hot air balloons have become a popular tourist attraction in recent years, with dozens of them launching into the air each morning to see the sunrise over Turkey's famously beautiful landscape — including its "fairy chimney" volcanic cones and subterranean cities carved out of soft stone.
The crash is not the region's first.
Last year, three Brazilian tourists were killed and 20 injured when two balloons collided, and a British tourist died in 2009 during a crash.
