A hospital charged a Denver mom $1,216 for a circumcision, a bit steep since it was supposedly for her newborn daughter.
Lisa Powell-Dejong told 9News she could only laugh when the bill for $1216.50 arrived from Sky Ridge Medical Center following the December birth of Liberty Mae.
Her daughter was born nearly a month prematurely, at three pounds, 12 ounces, and had to be kept in the hospital’s NICU for five days.
When opening the bill, Powell-Dejong was expecting to see an extra charge for the extended stay but not for a procedure that was not performed,
“I was like, wait. What?” she said. “I just laughed.”
Powell-Dejong said she had just finished paying off the medical costs for her first daughter’s birth, who was also kept in NICU for nine days, but she regretted not checking that bill.
“I sure wish I had,” she told Mom.me. “She is almost three and I just paid her hospital bill off! Makes me wonder what was on there.”
Sky Ridge spokesperson Linda Watson admitted to the billing error to 9News.
“This simple, human coding error did not impact the patient’s final bill nor did it impact insurance reimbursement,” Watson said.
“We corrected the invoice as soon as we learned of the issue, notified the patient and sent an updated version to the insurance company. We always encourage patients with billing questions or concerns to contact us directly so we can address them quickly.”
It’s not uncommon for medical bills to contain errors that often go unnoticed, according to Time, which reported that a Medicare audit discovered about 49% of bills contained errors, and that some medical centers messed up on more than 80% of claims.
