A massive hornet's nest was discovered this week in an abandoned Texas trailer that had been empty for about 10 years.

The huge nest was found in Alto, Texas, about 140 miles southeast of Dallas, where Marcus Smith told KYTX-TV that he was helping a family friend renovate the long-abandoned trailer that was located in their backyard.

Smith said he was stunned by what he found when he entered the trailer.

"So I walk in and I see this massive structure, it looked unreal," he told the television station. "Like a cocoon, or like mold. But then it clicked to me. This must be a hive or something."

According to Orkin.com, hornet's nests are constructed out of a paper-like substance made up of saliva and wood pulp, usually found in tree tops, attic rafters, eaves of houses, and in other covered areas. Queen hornets start the nest construction to lay eggs.

"The size of a hornet nest grows in proportion to the size of the colony," according to Orkin.com. "Nests may grow to be as large as basketballs through subsequent generations of workers. However, nests are only used once; worker populations perish in winter, leaving only the fertilized females to begin new colonies in the coming warm seasons."

Smith, at six-feet tall, told KYTX-TV that the hornet's nest in the abandoned trailer rose to his chest. He added that the family was working to get it removed.

Pictures of the huge nest freaked out several people online.
