The dog of ex-Olympic soccer star Hope Solo was shot in a "heinous act" on Wednesday night. The Doberman is now in critical condition at the Wilkes Veterinary Hospital and Solo and her husband, Jerramy Stevens, are reeling in shock.

The former U.S. Women's National Team goalkeeper shared the news Thursday on Instagram in a caption of herself and Stevens with their five dogs.

"Our magnificent dog Conan (brown, on the far left) is in critical condition after being shot last night," Solo wrote. "It's hard news to share, but harder to make sense of this heinous act. Jerramy and I are shocked and heartbroken, but we want to say thank you to Wilkes Veterinary Hospital and their staff for rushing Conan into emergency care, as well as their COVID-19 care practices."

The dog appears to have been shot in its front leg, but circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear.

Solo won her first Olympic gold medal in 2008, after she was benched in 2007 for the Women's World Cup semifinals. The U.S. lost that match, reported USA Today. Her second gold medal came in 2012 and, three years later, Solo was part of the team that won the 2015 World Cup. She retired from the international stage in 2016.

Solo is an animal lover who owns multiple chickens along with her five Dobermans. In an interview with People, she said the dog breed reminded Stevens of her.

"Jerramy always says, 'Dobermans remind me of you. They're loyal, regal, and people are scared of them.' But they wouldn't hurt a fly and Sasha is pretty much scared of everything."
