A Canadian couple that got hookworms in their feet from walking barefoot on the sand during a tropical vacation are warning future travelers about the possibility.

Katie Stephens and boyfriend Eddie Zytner of Ontario noticed their feet were itchy while they were still staying at the IFA Villas Bavaro Resort in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, Stephens wrote on Facebook, but they thought the itchiness was caused by bug bites that would go away when they went home to Canada.

Instead, the itching got worse, their feet began to swell up, and bumps developed on their toes. It took three doctors to figure out that the couple had contracted hookworms in their feet, Fox News reported.

The medicine prescribed was rejected by the couple’s health coverage because it isn’t licensed in Canada, Stephens wrote. Her mother had to drive to Detroit to get the medication in America for the couple, Fox News reported.

Their feet are now improving, but they still have a ways to go to repair the damage to their skin.

Stephens' Facebook post warns others about the dangers of tropical sand and advises wearing shoes on foreign beaches. The post has more than 56,000 shares and 11,000 comments.

While many commenters were sympathetic or thanked Stephens for the warning, others made digs at the Canadian health care system and its perceived shortcomings.

“Wow, so sorry you had to deal with this and Canada refused medicine. Those in USA want insurance like Canada? No thank you!!” wrote one commenter.
