Honeoye Fire: Blaze at Old Construction Building Destroys Structure

A massive fire in a former construction building in Honeoye, N.Y., took more than 10 fire departments to get under control, 13WHAM TV reported.

The building, which had been listed for sale, was completely destroyed, the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle said.

The fire call was received about 4 a.m. Thursday, and it took firefighters hours to get it under control.

The building was owned by Stone Construction Co., which closed earlier this year. Although much of the building was vacant, a local fire official said part was still used for storage.

The intense fire caused the responding departments to eventually switch to tanker trucks, which took water from a nearby lake so as not to deplete the community’s water supply, the RDC said. The City of Rochester, located nearby, is planning to help refill the city’s water system, the paper said.

Local WHAM news reporter Jennifer Johnson tweeted a vibrant picture of the destructive fire lighting up the early morning hours:

But just hours later, the shell of the building remained and a tweet indicated it will be demolished today because of safety concerns:

A live video of the collapse, done by Johnson for WHAM, showed the building’s collapse and reported that asbestos abatement had been going on at the building this week.
