A 54-year-old man was arrested and booked for allegedly stabbing a young Russian tourist at the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Wednesday as the victim's wife looked on in horror.
"[The victim] kept looking at his hand and putting it to his neck. There was blood squirting out between his fingers," said witness Liza Brown, 35, who is visiting Los Angeles from South Carolina,
according to ABC News.
"He kept looking at his hand like he couldn't believe it. It was like something out of a horror movie."
The victim, reportedly lanced with a kitchen knife, was transported to a nearby hospital, and is expected to survive.
Two off-duty New York Police Department investigators heard the screams and cries of nearby witnesses, approached, flashed their badges, and subdued the attacker.
"My partner said, 'Hey, Al, he's got a knife,'" said Detective Albert Ramos, referring to his partner, Dan Mulligan. "I drew my weapon and said, 'I got it.'"
"Your training kicks in and you just go," Mulligan said.
"We were able to take him into custody without actually shooting him. Fortunately, he put the knife down," said Ramos.
A nearby worker retrieved zip ties to bind the alleged attacker's hands while everyone waited for Los Angeles Police to arrive.
Donald M. Offerman, a Los Angeles resident, was booked on suspicion of attempted murder, and his bail was set at $500,000.
"We are extremely happy and grateful that these detectives were not only there but took heroic action to catch this perpetrator and take him into custody," said LAPD Cmdr. Andrew Smith,
according to the Los Angeles Times. They "likely saved the life of the man who was stabbed," he added.
"I don't think we are heroes, I think we did our job, we definitely appreciate it. It feels good to get a pat on the back every once in a while,"
Ramos told KABC-TV.
In June 2013, a 23-year-old woman was fatally stabbed in the same area outside of the TCL Chinese Theatre after refusing to pay panhandlers $1 for taking their photo.
