The Venom F5 designed by Hennessy Special Vehicles was designed to be the first street-legal car to reach 300 mph.
The one-and-a-half ton vehicle has a carbon fiber body, twin-turbocharged 7.4 liter V8 engine rated at 1,600 horsepower and 1,300 lb-ft of torque, and rear-wheel drive with a mid-engine chassis, Fox News reported.
The Texas-based company designed the Venom F5 in-house and says it will accelerate to 186 miles per hour in under 10 seconds and from 0 to 249 and back in less than 30 seconds, breaking the current record of 36 seconds, Fox reported.
The Venom F5 is rumored to be more aerodynamic than its predecessor the Venom GT, which had 1,244 horsepower and a top speed of 270 miles per hour, according to Fox.
The car will be road tested in 2018 and deliveries will begin in 2019, according to Motortrend. Only 24 cars will be built, and will cost $1.6 million each.
Motortrend reported that the F5 hasn’t yet hit 300 miles per hour in any actual tests, and that official speed trials won’t be conducted until after the first customer orders are filled.
Some details of the engine have yet to be finalized, and two are currently being tested, Motortrend reported.
Hennessey is in a race with Bugatti Veyron to reach 300 mph, according to Top Gear. Small details will be important in reaching that milestone, including the tires used and the car’s aerodynamics, as well as finding ways to safely disperse the heat that is generated by such high speeds.
The F5 was unveiled Wednesday at the 2017 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, Nevada, according to the Hennessey website.
While some on Twitter considered the car dangerous, others were drawn to it.
