Hawaii's attack warning sirens will be reactivated in December in the event of a possible missile barrage from North Korea.

The sirens have not been used since the Cold War, ABC News reported, but public officials have been ramping up emergency plans for several months since North Korea threatened a nuclear attack against the United States, according to the Honolulu Civil Beat.

While North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has not directly mentioned an attack on Hawaii in his threats, missile launches over Japan and increased tension between North Korea and the United States prompted officials to address preparedness, ABC News said.

A video featuring Vern Miyagi, the administrator of the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency, said the public will regularly hear the testing of the sirens starting Dec. 1 and people should to go the website www.Ready.Hawaii.gov for more information.

"When (the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency) started this campaign there were concerns we would scare the public," Miyagi said, per ABC News. "What we are putting out is information based on the best science that we have on what would happen if that weapon hit Honolulu or the assumed targets."

Miyagi said that while the chances North Korea will actually attack Hawaii appear remote, preparation in case of such an attack remains vital.

"Hawaii is a likely target because we're closer to North Korea than most of the continental United States," Miyagi told NBC News. "As we track the news and see tests, both missile launches and nuclear tests, it's the elephant in the room. We can't ignore it. People of Hawaii need to know what Hawaii is doing in preparation for this."
