"Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" set a new record at the Olivier Awards in London on Sunday, as the stage play received nine awards, including Best New Play.
Before Sunday night, "Matilda the Musical" and "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time," which were both successful in London before they hit the Broadway scene, were the record-holders, with seven Oliviers, according to The New York Times.
Jamie Parker, who plays Harry, won best actor for the portrayal, and both Noma Dumezweni, who plays Hermione, and Anthony Boyle, who plays Scorpius, won supporting actor honors.
"I couldn't be more delighted for our immensely talented cast and creative team," JK Rowling, who wrote the script with Jack Thorne, wrote on Twitter.
The success "Harry Potter and the Curse Child" has now had on the stage comes after the book sold 2 million copies in just 48 hours, according to Teen Vogue.
Other winners at the awards ceremony included "Groundhog Day," which won MasterCard Best New Musical and Best Actor (Andy Karl); "Dreamgirls," which won Best Actress (Amber Riley) and Best Supporting Actor (Adam J. Bernard); and "Yema," which was honored with Best Revival and Best Actress (Billie Piper).
"Harry Potter," which will soon be on Broadway, is a play broken into two parts. The time period of the play is set at about two decades after Harry's time spent at Hogwarts, the "wizarding" academy, the Times noted.
