Harlan Ellison, a prominent science fiction writer who contributed to such shows as "Star Trek" and "The Outer Limits" and wrote "A Boy and His Dog," died Thursday at age 84.

A family friend announced the death on Twitter.

"A Boy and His Dog" was made into a film starring Don Johnson in 1975. Ellison also published short story collections, including "Shatterday," in 1980, Deadline noted. He also wrote the screenplay for "The Oscar," and contributed to shows including "The Flying Nun," "Route 66," and "The Alfred Hitchcock Hour."

Ellison won numerous awards during his career, including multiple Nebula, Hugo and Edward awards, along with Edgar Allen Poe and Writers Guild of America trophies, Deadline noted.

Ellison's biography, "A Lit Fuse: The Provocative Life of Harlan Ellison, an Exploration," was published in 2017.

Ellison was known as cantankerous and litigious, Variety reported, citing a 2009 lawsuit against CBS Paramount Television related to the “Star Trek” episode “City on the Edge of Forever,” a 1980 copyright infringement case against ABC and Paramount Studios related to the short story "Brillo," and a lawsuit against James Cameron and others behind 1984’s "The Terminator."

Twitter users remembered Ellison.
