Production of the standalone Han Solo movie has finished. In celebration, the studio announced the title of the forthcoming "Star Wars" spin-off, which is slated to hit theaters next spring.
Director Ron Howard announced the accomplishment Tuesday in a Twitter video.
“Solo: A Star Wars Story” will be the film’s title, Howard communicated by way of holding up a board with the title on it. Howard took over as director in August after Phil Lord and Chris Miller were fired for clashing with Lucasfilm chief Kathleen Kennedy and co-writer/executive producer Lawrence Kasdan, Variety reported.
“It was a culture clash from Day 1,” a source said to Variety about Lord and Miller’s exit. “She didn’t even like the way they folded their socks.”
Kasdan wrote “The Empire Strikes Back” and “The Force Awakens” and co-wrote “Solo” with his son Jon, Entertainment Weekly reported.
The film shows a 20-something Han Solo and Chewbacca’s exploits before they joined the rebellion, including their dealings with Lando Calrissian.
Alden Ehrenreich (“Hail Caesar”) has the title role, Donald Glover (“Atlanta”) is Calrissian, and basketball player Joonas Suotamo plays the oversized Chewbacca. Others in the cast include Woody Harrelson, Thandie Newton, and Emilia Clarke, Variety reported.
“I hope you’ve enjoyed the pictures that I’ve been sharing,” Howard said in the video, referring to the Instagram stills he has posted since taking over as director. The release date for “Solo” is May 25, 2018.
Fans congratulated Howard and shared their excitement for the movie’s release on Twitter.
