Pop singer Halsey bravely opened up about the struggles she faced before becoming a star, admitting she almost resorted to prostitution when she was broke and homeless.
Speaking at the Ending Youth Homelessness: A Benefit for My Friend's Place gala in Los Angeles on Saturday, the 24-year-old "Bad At Love" singer explained, when she was homeless, living out of a duffel bag and had no idea where her next meal would come from, she began debating the idea of becoming a sex worker to get by.
"It wasn't because something was wrong with me, and it wasn't because my parents didn't love me — because they did very much," she said, according to Fox News. "But a series of unfortunate circumstances led me to be in that position, and it can happen to absolutely anyone.
"My friends were picking out decorations for their dorms, and I was debating on whether or not I should let a stranger inside of me so I could pay for my next meal."
Halsey has been vocal about her past, which reads like anything but a fairytale. She previously told Rolling Stone that her parents had kicked her out after she dropped out of school. She recalled having just $9 in her bank account and drinking Red Bull all night to stay awake because "it was less dangerous to not sleep than it was to sleep somewhere random."
Her luck changed when she met Jeremy Vuernick, an A&R rep for Capitol Music Group who now heads the company as vice president.
"When I met him, I had crazy hair, I had one demo in my pocket, and I was carrying a gray duffel bag," she said Saturday, according to Fox. "Sat down in his office, at his cubicle, and he asked me, 'What's in the bag?' I looked him dead in the eyes and I said, 'This is my house.'"
Halsey made the revelations while speaking out about the homeless epidemic, which she told audiences Saturday was serious and deadly.
"It's more than young people needing validation and needing people to listen to them — this is life or death," she said, according to Us Magazine.
