Gregg Popovich, the outspoken coach of the San Antonio Spurs, said Tuesday that those like him who are "rich as hell," should give to charity because they "don't need it," the New York Post reported.
Popovich made the comment before the Spurs beat the New York Nets 109-97 in the Barclays Center on Tuesday. He is known for giving to various charities, including the Champions Against Hunger charity dinner, the Post said.
"Because we're rich as hell, we don't need it all," Popovich told reporters, per the Post. "Some other people need it and you're an a** if you don't give it."
The New York Daily News said Popovich also has given to the San Antonio Food Bank, Roy Maas’ Youth Alternatives, Boys and Girls Club, and the Miracle League over the years.
When asked how the Spurs have continued to play at a high clip this season with a 24-11 record without two of its best players, Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green, because of injuries, Popovich threw in a little politics with his answer, the tabloid noted.
"It's basketball," said the outspoken critic of President Donald Trump, per the Post. "It's not the Middle East peace process. It's not figuring out why our democracy is being eroded. It's pick-and-roll. Big deal."
Popovich, the current dean of NBA coaches, has led the Spurs to four NBA titles, in 1999, 2003, 2005 and 2007. He is also slated to coach the USA men's basketball team in the 2020 Olympics in Toyko, according to USA Today.
