A green puppy born to a golden retriever earlier this month in the Scottish Highlands has appropriately been named Forest.
Forest is one of nine puppies born in the litter, and one of only four puppies ever known to be born with green fur.
Veterinarians believe a green bile pigment found in the placenta may mix with the amniotic fluid and stain the fur, which fades within a few weeks after birth, according to People.
The substance, Biliverdin, is present in humans and causes the color of some bruising and jaundice in babies. It also is found in the blood of many fish, as well as in the eggs of frogs and the wings of moths and butterflies.
The Sutherland family, which owns Forest’s mother Rio, said they have found homes for all the other puppies but will keep the green one, which is believed to bring good luck, the Daily Mail reported.
Twitter users were surprised and joked about the green puppy.
