A group of fishermen in New Jersey had a close encounter with a great white shark that stole the chum bag off the side of their 35-foot boat on Friday.

“He ripped our chum bag right off,” one fisherman says on the video, while a woman responds: “Was it worth it, though? I’ll buy you a new chum bag. That is amazing.”

The boat is owned by Steve Clark, who described the chum-stealing shark event to CBS Philly: “It was awesome. It wasn’t scary, cause we’re used to sharks. It was awesome.”

The shark circled the boat for 20 minutes, he said.

Clark said he thought the great white shark was about 16 feet long and probably weighed just under a ton.

“The likelihood of seeing one that close, it’s probably never gonna happen again. It was a great event, a once-in-a-lifetime deal,” he told CBS.

A shopkeeper gave the group a discount on a new chum bag after hearing the story.

Twitter users reacted with surprise and amusement.
