Grant Hart, singer and drummer of alternative rock band, Hüsker Dü, died Thursday at age 56, after battling cancer.

Hart was pronounced dead at about 2 a.m. Thursday after a monthslong battle with kidney cancer, Billboard noted.

His bandmate, Bob Mould, confirmed the news with a lengthy post on Facebook, in which he reminisced about the time spent with Hart.

"The tragic news of Grant’s passing was not unexpected to me," he wrote. "My deepest condolences and thoughts to Grant’s family, friends, and fans around the world."

Mould described Hart as "a gifted visual artist, a wonderful story teller, and a frighteningly talented musician."

Hart, along with his bandmates, inspired countless other '90s alternative rock bands with Hüsker Dü.

The Minnesota-based trio became one of the first underground American indie bands to secure a major record label deal, Rolling Stone noted.

The band would go on to release several full-length albums and enjoy a successful musical career spanning the 1980s, until finally dissolving in 1988, when Mould left to pursue a solo career.

Not long after this, Hart opted to launch his own solo career, which garnered relative success over the years and even united the musician with Mould on stage 16-years down the line, Rolling Stone noted.

In his post, Mould said he stayed in contact with Hart despite having parted ways when their band broke up.

"We stayed in contact over the next 29 years — sometimes peaceful, sometimes difficult, sometimes through go-betweens," he said.

"For better or worse, that’s how it was, and occasionally that’s what it is when two people care deeply about everything they built together."

Mould noted how everyone touched by Hart’s spirit would always remember the musician.

"Godspeed, Grant. I miss you. Be with the angels."
