Veterinarians from the San Diego Zoo performed a rare
C-section on a gorilla, delivering a healthy female baby on Wednesday, The Los Angeles Times said.
The 18-year-old gorilla Imani was in distress with her pregnancy and a team of veterinarians made the tough decision to go ahead with the cesarean section.

The baby was 4.6 pounds and was born at full term, the Times said. She is still in intensive care at the zoo, getting needed fluids and being monitored around the clock.
"In retrospect, the C-section was the right decision," Nadine Lamberski, associate director of veterinary services, told the Times.
“She’s extremely strong. She can grasp. She kicks. She’s vocal, has a very strong suckle reflex. She looks around.
She can actually hold her own head up, which is pretty amazing,” Lamberski told The Associated Press.

mani is doing fine after her 12-hour labor and C-section, ABC News said. A more normal labor time for gorillas is four hours.
The San Diego Zoo released a video of the new arrival.
