Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell have been together for 38 years but never felt the need to get married. Many have questioned their decision but the pair are happy with how their relationship is. Now Hawn and Russell are opening up about why they haven’t tied the knot in an interview with People.
"For people like us, the marriage certificate wasn’t going to create anything that otherwise we wouldn’t have. I don’t know. 40 years isn’t enough to finally say, 'Well I guess ...'" Russell explained.
"It’s not about the marriage. It’s about the people and the relationship, and the will to stay together," Hawn added. "And that’s a big one because if you want it, you can have it. You’ve got to give things up, but the joy and the excitement of being together and touching the toes of somebody at night is really a nice feeling."
During the interview, Hawn pointed out that, in some instances, marriage works, but that is not always the case.
"Our children got married," she said. "I mean, they didn’t not get married."
Hawn and Russell share Wyatt Russell, 34, and also have children from previous marriages. Russell has a son, Boston, 40, and Hawn has a daughter, actress Kate Hudson, 41, and son Oliver Hudson, 44.
"Oliver’s very happily married and Wyatt’s very happily married," Hawn continued. "Katie got married once and that didn’t work, and she’s with this most amazing human and I don’t know if she’ll marry again. The point is that we all tried marriage and sometimes marriage doesn’t work."
Russell, who was previously married to Season Hubley, and Hawn, who was previously married to Gus Trikonis and Bill Hudson, met while filming 1983's "Swing Shift" and have been together ever since. Their relationship is solid and Hawn revealed the secret to their success.
"You’ve just got to want to be together," she said. "I don’t think there’s any way other than do it."
