Gloria Steinem’s life and career will be the raison d'etre of a new off-Broadway play set to premier this fall in New York City.
Titled "Gloria: A Life," the production will include an all-female creative and production team with Tony-winning producer Daryl Roth at the helm, The Hollywood Reporter revealed.
The play will be written by Emily Mann, who was previously nominated for a Tony Award, and directed by Diane Paulus, whose past works include "Pippin" and "Waitress."
Steinem, a veteran journalist and activist who helped create the modern-day feminist movement, has given the play her approval, saying she was thrilled to see her career unfold on stage.
Roth, who announced the production on Wednesday, said it was "incredibly important to be telling this story at this moment in time," referring to the #MeToo and Time's Up era and how there was a growing sense of female empowerment within society.
"Gloria’s life and all she has accomplished brings us hope, reminding us how far we’ve come, and inspiring a new generation to go further."
Women empowerment is something extremely important to the feminist, who drew both praise and criticism when Steinem defended Hillary Clinton by saying that men who insulted her simply felt "unmanned" by a powerful woman.
The production will echo her sentiments in a unique format structured around two acts, the first of which would be a traditional play comprising six characters, while the second half will encourage audience participation through a “talking circle” with a moderator, Deadline reported.
"What makes me feel enthusiastic about this whole idea is that after act one about my life, the audience will take over and become a talking circle with a life of its own," said Steinem, per Broadway Buzz.
"During many years of traveling and organizing, I’ve come to have great faith in the magic of people talking together after a shared experience. Computers may give us information, but only being together with all five senses creates empathy and action."
