Giuliani Still Considering Bid for GOP Presidential Nomination

By    |   Wednesday, 07 September 2011 09:31 AM EDT

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani has not ruled out seeking the GOP presidential nomination but says the Republican Party would have to be “truly desperate,” for him to be nominated, according to CNN.

“I understand how primaries work,” Giuliani said Tuesday at the National Press Club, adding that history shows voters in the early primaries — Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina — tend to favor candidates who are “conservative on social issues.”

“I’m not conservative on social issues, and I’m not going to change just to become president,” he said.

Still, the man who became known as “the nation’s mayor” because of the steady and determined way he handled the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, said he believes that there’s “always a chance” he could win if he runs.

“I’m a realist and if I think we’re truly desperate then I may run — which is the way I got elected mayor of New York City,” he said with a laugh. “Do you know what my slogan was? You can’t do any worse.”

Asked which candidate he may end up endorsing if he decides not to run, Giuliani deferred, although he did support Rick Perry in his last bid for governor of Texas in 2010, and believes he has a good record that would translate well in the White House.
