A former Gestapo headquarters has been turned into luxury condos in Hamburg, Germany, sparking anger from the families of Nazi torture victims and their supporters, especially because they say there are no plans for an adequate memorial.

The Stadthöfe, or City Courtyards, was one of four buildings that Hamburg city officials allowed Quantum Immobilien to begin converting into multi-purpose apartments in 2009, RT.com reported.

The buildings date back to the 19th century, but the Stadthöfe became the headquarters of the Gestapo – the Nazi secret police who used the facility to interrogate and torture people from 1933-43 during the reign of the Third Reich, per RT.

"Many people died after the torture, which is unmentioned," Detlef Baade, the son of a resistance fighter killed by the Gestapo, told RT. "That's why there must be a commemorative place here. It is a social obligation for the victims, who have come here with sorrow."

"One must feel sorry for the future tenants. They do not even know that if it's a hotel, for example, it's a hotel of horror and torture," Baade said.

CityLab.com said that the marketing for the building, which is scheduled to open in May, has little to no plans for a memorial, and that also left people angry.

Bernhard Esser, whose uncle was transferred from the Gestapo site to a concentration camp where he died, was one of several people who protested outside of building during a demonstration last week, calling for some type of memorial there, CityLab.com said.

"The whole building was sold by Hamburg city, and part of that deal was that the company 'Quantum' will create and take care of a decent memorial," Norbert Hackbusch from the Die Linke party told RT.

"Now the question is what is a good or decent place for the memorial, and this is the topic of the dispute. We are convinced that what is planned now is not worthy of the memorial," he added.
