For the first time, students seeking to enroll in Georgia’s five most competitive public colleges are being required to demonstrate they are in the United States legally, the
Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Thursday.
So far, only one of the more than 10,000 students accepted to the five institutions was found to be an illegal immigrant and barred from enrolling, the AJC said.
College officials canceled applications this spring from three prospective students who were not in the country legally, the paper said.
College officials aren’t sure whether the new rule is deterring illegal immigrants from applying, or whether they weren’t seeking admission in the first place.
The new rule affects admissions to the University of Georgia, Georgia Tech, Georgia State University, Georgia College & State University, and Georgia Health Sciences University, the paper said.
