A pro-gun political ad in Georgia that shows a gubernatorial candidate cleaning a shotgun, then pointing the gun at a teen whom he says wants to date his daughter as the two talk, is drawing strong criticism.
The ad is titled “Jake” and features Brian Kemp, who is running for governor in the state. Local news station 11 Alive said many its viewers objected to the ad.
“We are gun owners and we are outraged,” one unnamed viewer was reported as saying.
Others called the commercial “disturbing” and said it made them and their families “uncomfortable.” Many asked the station to stop showing the ad.
The ad shows Kemp cleaning his gun while prompting Jake to list Kemp’s positions as a candidate. At the end of the ad, Kemp asked Jake about the rules for dating his daughter.
“Respect, and a healthy appreciation for the Second Amendment,” the teen says, looking just a little intimidated.
The ad is the latest in a series of GOP pieces that aim to show clear and unwavering support for the Second Amendment as a counterweight to recent calls for more gun control after February’s school shooting in Parkland, Florida, 11 Alive reported.
Kemp is the current secretary of state in Georgia and is one of seven GOP candidates seeking the governorship. Kemp had not responded to the controversy generated by the ad as of Monday, HuffPost reported.
11 Alive released a statement Monday stating that Federal Communications Commission rules prevent it from removing or altering advertising from any legally qualified political candidate.
Kemp found few defenders even on Twitter where opinions are usually diverse.
There were a few who liked it, though.
