A George Washington Bridge protest blocked traffic going into Manhattan and led to the arrest of 10 people Wednesday morning.

Protesters brought traffic on the bridge to a halt when they got onto the bridge and chained themselves together, The New York Daily News reported.

Port Authority police arrested 10 protesters — seven men and three women — who were holding up banners that read “Resist, Organize, Rise Up,” The Daily News noted.

The arrests came after commuters took it upon themselves to confront the protesters, demanding they move out of the roadway.

“You can protest anywhere you want, but not here, when we have to make a living,” said one commuter who was able to pull down one of the banners protesters were holding, according to the Daily News. “Guess what? You ain’t protesting no more.”

Despite these remarks, there were some commuters who sided with the protesters.

“You think that getting to work on time is more important than people’s lives?” one of the commuters asked, the publication reported.

According to a tweet from a reporter who was on the bridge, the protesters were demanding “equal rights for immigrants” and “political power for marginalized communities.”

These demands are part of the #WeAreVisible campaign, The Daily News noted.

According to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the protest created delays that exceeded an hour.

The demonstration that started during early morning rush hour traffic came to an end a little before 9 a.m., according to Port Authority police spokesman Joe Pentangelo, NJ.com noted.

There are pending charges against the protesters involved.
