George Lucas’ museum has found a home in Los Angeles, where it’s set to house the famous filmmakers’ personal art collection.
Los Angeles beat out San Francisco to become the official site for the $1 billion Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, according to CNN. Chicago also was considered as a site.
The museum’s board of directors made the announcement on Tuesday.
The museum will be located in LA’s Exposition Park.
“Settling on a location proved to be an extremely difficult decision precisely because of the desirability of both sites and cities,” the board said in a statement, according to CNN. “South Los Angeles’s Promise Zone best positions the museum to have the greatest impact on the broader community, fulfilling our goal of inspiring, engaging and educating a broad and diverse visitorship. Exposition Park is a magnet for the region and accessible from all parts of the city.”
“As a museum uniquely focused on narrative art, we look forward to becoming part of a dynamic museum community, surrounded by more than 100 elementary and high schools, one of the country’s leading universities as well as three other world-class museums,” the statement said.
According to LA Mayor Eric Garcetti, the museum could launch by May 4, 2020, the Hollywood Reporter noted.
Among Lucas’ art collection to be featured in the museum will be “Star Wars” collectibles, classic photographs and a series of historic paintings.
The “Star Wars” creator wants to focus heavily on providing the museum’s future visitors with artwork that gives a narrative, according to the museum’s website.
“Narrative is one of the oldest and most important impulses in art. It is also the most popular form of art,” Lucas said on the site. “Tracing the arc of narrative art reveals how culture is created, reinforced, and then compelled to evolve.”
Lucas and his wife Mellody Hobson reportedly will invest more than $1 billion in the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art.
