Former President George H.W. Bush was discharged from Houston Methodist Hospital on Friday after spending two weeks being treated for chronic bronchitis and mild pneumonia.
It was the second time Bush was admitted to the hospital this year; he had a more serious case of pneumonia in January that required 16 days of hospitalization, including time on a ventilator and breathing tube, according to the Houston Chronicle.
This time, the pneumonia resolved within a few days of admission to the hospital, but doctors wanted to be sure the chronic bronchitis was under control before sending Bush home, the Chronicle reported.
The former president received well-wishes from many people around the country, and he was visited by his son, former president George W. Bush, while in the hospital
“President and Mrs. Bush are very pleased to be home spending time with family and friends and grateful for the outstanding care provided by his doctors and nurses,” Bush’s office said in a press release, KHOU reported.
Bush is nearly 93 years old. Spokesman Jim McGrath said last week the former president would probably leave Texas soon for his summer home in Kennebunkport, Maine, KHOU reported.
Messages on Twitter continued to wish the former president well as he recovers.
