A Gateway Arch light strobing and hovering over the famous landmark before daybreak on Tuesday has mystified St. Louis residents.

Chase Rhoads, who works at the Casino Queen, told KTVI-TV he saw the flashing light above the arch between 2:30 a.m. and 3 a.m. and shot a video of it.

He posted the video on YouTube, narrating what he saw over the monument.

"I was sitting on my break just smoking a cigarette as normal and looking at the arch and the strobe light appeared," Rhoads said in an interview with KTVI-TV. "Like I said, it didn't fly over; it didn't do anything like that. It just disappeared."

A surveillance camera at Malcolm W. Martin Memorial Park also recorded the strange blinking light and video was posted on its Facebook page on Wednesday. The video has received more than 570,000 views as of Friday.

"There's something weird with that one," Mike Buehlhorn, director of the Metro East Parks and Recreation District, told The Associated Press.Representatives from Scott Air Force Base and the Federal Aviation Administration knew nothing about the source of the light.

"I'm not a big UFO person," Rhoads told KTVI-TV. "… It's definitely odd (for the light) to be dead center over a national monument like that. If that was the White House, people would be all over it."

Many on social media had various, and some humorous, takes on the mysterious light.
