Gary Schara was arrested and charged for allegedly raping and killing 24-year-old middle school teacher Lisa Ziegert in 1992 in Agawam, Massachusetts.

The West Springfield man appeared in the Westfield District Court, according to The Boston Globe, which reported that he was ordered held without bail on Tuesday.

The 48-year-old is facing charges of kidnapping, aggravated rape and murder. He has entered a not guilty plea.

Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gulluni revealed news of the arrest on Monday, posting on Facebook that authorities linked Schara to the 1992 incident through DNA testing and analysis.

Gulluni reported on his website that Ziegart was abducted in the early hours of April 15, 1992, while working at her second job at a card shop in Agawam.

Her body was discovered four days later abandoned in a wooded area nearby after being sexually assaulted.

"For the last 25 years, a joint investigation into Lisa’s disappearance and murder has been conducted," Gulluni said on his website.

Numerous forensic testing procedures and analyses had been performed but last year a single source male DNA profile was developed from evidence recovered from the crime scene.

The DNA had been run against state, national, and international DNA databases without a match for years so investigators decided to direct their attention back to a small circle of individuals who had been identified as persons of interest but whose DNA profile was not in the databases.

Last week these individuals, including Schafa, were ordered to provide DNA samples to authorities, Gulluni said on his website.

During this time a source provided police with documents, allegedly written by Schara, admitting to the abduction, rape, and murder of Ziegert, according to the report.

On Thursday, Gulluni said, police learned that Schara, who had fled to Connecticut and attempted to commit suicide, had been located by local law enforcement.

His DNA was obtained and matched to the single source male DNA profile previously developed from evidence.
