Support for Ill. Gambling Expansion Fades

Monday, 15 October 2012 10:51 AM EDT

Public support for a major gambling expansion in Illinois is apparently fading, as Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel pushes for a casino to be opened in the city.

According to a new Chicago Tribune/WGN-TV poll, 47 percent of voters oppose new casinos in the state while 43 percent support them.

The poll of 700 registered voters taken earlier this month appears to back Gov. Pat Quinn's veto in August of the legislature's latest gambling expansion bill, which also included placing video slots at horse racing tracks.

The poll, according to a report Monday in the Tribune, contrasted sharply with a survey in February, which found that 50 percent of voters approved of expanded gambling across the state to help generate new and much needed revenues while 42 percent disapproved.

The new survey also revealed that the gender gap in support of gambling continues, with 51 percent of men and only 36 percent of women supporting more gambling outlets.
