Actor Gabrielle Union opened up about her struggle to have a child in her upcoming book, “We’re Going to Need More Wine.”
“I have had 8 or 9 miscarriages,” 44-year-old Union wrote in the book, which releases on Oct. 17, People reported. “For three years, my body has been a prisoner of trying to get pregnant.”
Union is married to NBA star Dwayne Wade, who has two children from a previous marriage.
Union, star of BET’s “Being Mary Jane,” wrote that she and Wade “remain bursting with love and ready to do anything to meet the child we’ve both dreamed of,” People reported.
She told People she didn't want to have children until she became a stepmom to Wade’s sons, 15-year-old Zaire and 10-year-old Zion, and helping raise his nephew Dahveon Morris, 16. “I never wanted kids. Then I became a stepmom, and there was no place I’d rather be than with them,” Union said.
She also shared she is often asked whether she’s pregnant because of the bloating caused by the fertility treatments she undergoes each month, and that she tries to keep her monthly doctors’ visits private to avoid the questions.
“Anytime I go into a doctor’s office I feel like I’m a member of SEAL Team Six undercover because I don’t want people to speculate,” she told People.
Union also talked about bullying, competition between women in Hollywood, and beauty standards, among other topics in the book, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Twitter users pushed back against mean-spirited comments by others about Union’s difficulties.
