French ice dancer Gabriella Papadakis was in tears Monday after a wardrobe malfunction during her short program with partner Guillaume Cizeron exposed part of her breast on international television during the Winter Olympics as she performed.
The incident occurred when the clasp of a halter top on the ice dancer’s emerald green costume top unhooked and the halter opened up.
“I felt it right away, and then I prayed,” Papadakis said, USA Today Sports reported. “That is about all I could do.”
“It was my worst nightmare, happening at the Olympics,” she continued. “It happened in the first few seconds. I told myself I didn’t have a choice and that I had to keep going.”
The pair managed to hold everything in place fairly well until the final element of the performance, during which Papadakis threw herself backward into Cizeron’s arms and her costume moved instead of staying in place, exposing part of her left breast.
The dancers ended up in second place after the contest, placing just behind Canadians Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir. It was not clear whether they had gotten a point deduction for the costume issue.
After the routine was over, Papadakis cried as she went through the media interview zone, leaving Cizeron to field most of the questions for the couple.
“It’s frustrating to miss a few points because of a costume issue,” Cizeron said, USA Today reported. “It is not what we get ready for when we train. I am still proud that we managed to pull out a program like that even with a difficulty like this.”
“We just look forward to a new day tomorrow and we have all our chances to win and we will just do our best,” he finished.
