"Furious 7" blew the doors off the box office for the second weekend in a row, raking in $60.6 million from North American theaters.
According to Reuters, the weekend haul brought the movie's stateside total to $252.5 million.
"People feel like they're living through the summer movie season right now even though it's not summer," said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Rentrak. "It's the essence of a popcorn movie."
Many in the movie industry pointed out the wisdom of releasing "Furious 7" in April, when competition isn't so high. The film to fear this year, "Avengers: Age of Ultron," won't be out until May.
"Furious 7" lapped its nearest weekend competitor, "The Longest Ride," starring Scott Eastwood, several times. That film opened with $13.5 million in ticket sales, while DreamWorks' new animated alien film, "Home," took in $19 million in its third weekend.
"Studios are not afraid to place a strong movie in unconventional times and it's paying off quite well," said Phil Contrino, vice president and chief analyst at BoxOffice.com. "There's no need to open everything in June, July or May when you'll get creamed by whatever opens the next week."
